I was trying to draw again today for the first time in basically months. No idea why I stopped, and now I'm trying again I'm finding it very hard. Everything comes out very rough, and it's kind of nice, but not as nice as the rough drawings of Sam Vanallemeersch.

Rough is maybe not the kindest word, or the right word. I think these are lovely drawings. They're dark, and weird, and straightforward. Fantastic.

but I'm back and here is a small article on rebranding the U.S. Postal Service. I always find myself thinking about stuff like this and realising I'd have no idea how to rebrand something that would be easy to rebrand. I have so little idea, in fact, that I can't even think of a product, or business, it would be easy to rebrand. But the idea here is simple, and straightforward, and it makes it look like it was the easiest thing in the world to do, and maybe that's the indication of a good idea, and good design.

“I can stop this from happening,” he said to me. So nearly were my family, and this not-yet-boyfriend, at the park. Everything had gone wrong at the last crossing.

“Oh God, yes, stop it, please,” were among the things I said to the almost-boyfriend who stood now twice as tall, naked, looking like something from a Marilyn Manson video with, crucially, two horns at the top of his head(1).

“What the fuck?” I said.
“I beg you’re pardon?” Said my mum, from the other side of the road. The car had disappeared.

My mum had a nosebleed that no one mentioned, and the blood disappeared when it fell onto her clothes. She seemingly couldn’t taste it as it streamed onto the sandwiches she ate. She started to make a grinding noise when she walked.

A man was found in his car in a field with his body turned inside out.

“Shrug,” said the basically-boyfriend when I asked him about it, I mean that is literally what he said.

My sister asked eventually if something happened between us, either because he always mentioned to her inviting me to the pub, or because I never went.

Eventually I did, the same day I woke up and my mum’s fingers had no skin left.

“Don’t worry about it,” said my sister’s boyfriend when I asked him about it, in a way which made me actually worry more.

He offered me a drink which cost him £2.65, but me I have no idea how much.

computer shop review

My computer got a virus, I sent it into the shop to be fixed.
“We’ll,” they said, “have to wipe everything and start over.”
“Ok,” I said, “just back up my internet bookmarks.”
They said sure, but when I got my computer back: no bookmarks.

“What?” I asked.
“Bring it back in,” they said.

They recovered the hard disk or, as far as I was concerned, cast a spell, and gave me back my bookmarks, which turned out not to be my bookmarks, but a collection of random ass bookmarks for websites like 5mins.com, and dolphincrap.com, along with some bondage websites, for maximum embarrassment.

“Not my bookmarks,” I explained.
“What?” Asked the shop.
“NOT MY BOOKMARKS,” I said again.
“Ok, ok, we’ll fix,” said, again, the shop.

Having had my computer for another week, totalling three, I call again. They tell me it’s fixed.

“Your bookmarks,” they say, “we have restored them.”
But this is not true. What they have done is found a file I made about five years ago, containing bookmarks I put in there, which are, in terms of relevance to my life, five years old. They have done, in the three weeks they’ve had my computer, nothing. And they have charged me for work I did.

They either deleted the bookmarks themselves, like fools, or the virus corrupted the bookmarks and there was nothing the shop could have done.

“Look, sorry, there’s nothing we can do,” is one of the things they never said to me.

It looks now like I have a vibrant career ahead of me, working for a computer repair centre.

Don't know a thing about this guy, Don Klenn, check out his blog here, but I love these drawings he has done. Is this sort of thing called maximalist drawing? There's a crap ton of lines, anyway, and they all feature weird and creepy creatures. The kinds of things you just don't want to find outside your window when you pull your curtains at night.

There's some shades of Miyazaki around this, as well as Maurice Sendak maybe, and Gorey? I am not even sure. I hope you enjoy it all.

I just tried to print my CV but my printer said no. It is not the job of my printer to decide what I can and cannot print. That is the job of my brain. My printer is supposed to make it so I don’t have to write out, by hand, 6 copies of my 5 page CV.

Technology is supposed to make our lives easier. It starts with sharpened rocks, which makes killing animals easier, so we don’t have to stamp and choke everything we catch to death, such as crickets, or berries.

It lightens our workload. My printer has done this by simply refusing to do what I want it to. It doesn’t want me to do any work at all, not even printing related, since if I can’t print my CV I can’t apply for any fucking jobs.

What’s worse is if I was sent back in time to when I’d be expected to kill a saber tooth tiger to survive, I would be shit at that too. I can’t sharpen a spear. I wear fucking slippers everywhere I go. I can’t even get my printer to work. I would be skull fucked by the first 80 year old, wheelchair bound, Neanderthal to cross my path, which it would do without thinking, I’m sure.

I don’t even want to go into town with my CVs anyway, so certain am I no one will give me a job. Some of them won’t even wait until I leave before they burst out laughing, set my CV alight and piss it out, only to set it on fire again.

This planet is great. But people invented forms. Forms! When we used to have trees and shit.

I guess my problem is I don’t know how to collect food. If I was put in a jungle and told GET YOUR FOOD I’d be all well, ok, but I only have 50p and I haven’t seen a supermarket in maybe 300 miles and I think I might die before I’m even a quarter of the way there?

And I would die within five minutes because I touched a frog that was blue.

I heard it was cows that we first started trading. That was maybe good for a while. But slowly we were weaned onto harder stuff, like chick-peas, chicken breasts, envelopes and now we’ve forgotten how to tie rocks onto sticks to catch our own chick peas and so I have to get a job, which I can’t fucking do anyway. And I’ve never owned a cow, which doesn’t seem as relevant as I thought it would.

Just made this for no real reason, not sure i like it.

I wanted a big imposing shape, looking sort of like a rock or cliff face, and I got that. The whole novel is building up to the breakdown of the narrator, and it all takes place around this isolated cabin. But the ending is uplifting, there's some hope when things sort of settle.

Maybe those little arrow things need to be coming out of the title? Whatever, what do I know about illustration?

3D projection on buildings

Supposedly this video features 3D animations projected onto buildings. It looks great, and it's a great idea (but what could you use it for?) but I need to research how they did it. It's so clear as well that I'm finding it hard to believe it is a genuine projection.

Computer game covers

Almost universally computer game covers are shit. The absolute worst.

In my effort to illustrate basically everything I'm doing, I have done two covers for the computer game which has nearly destroyed my life since it came out: Modern Warfare 2.

There is a level in the game where you take part in a terrorist attack on a Russian airport. That was the moment in the game that stuck with me, and that's what I wanted to put on the cover. I was trying to boil it down to graphical symbols (bottom one), then I did the slightly kitsch version (top one), which maybe I prefer. I don't know.

I was out in town, everyone else massively lost at this point, and probably gone home, so I flagged down a taxi. My money spent on drinks, I tell him I have some at home.

We stop in Levenshulme for me to get cash. I get out all cool, like I actually have something in my bank account, but then I just fucking run.

I’m lost in this barbaric maze estate having run away after doing something bad; a feeling which is all too familiar. I’m at the age where most people have stopped doing this, or made it their career.

I make it back to the A6 and figure I could just do this again, all the way home, and be alright. So I’m flagging down taxis, then anyone, and eventually this guy stops.

We’re driving, I’m hitchhiking I guess, and he starts rubbing my leg.

Normally such stories involve alcohol but this time the girl was sober when she found herself with seven dudes in the woods.
She’d stumbled on some kind of commune; the other residents unwelcoming initially them each having Pasts. But she took to this, seeking her own clean slate, and became resident maid and cook and was accepted by the other seven, since they had issues with even basic hygiene living as they did in the woods and, because they were dwarves, spending all day down the mines which dwarves have done since Tolkien invented them with such force they became real and we now have dwarves in real life.

The dwarves left their problems at the cave mouth, but the girl’s mouth was getting her into trouble. A psychotic witch sought her out, disguised as an old woman selling apples. Typically one of these apples was poisoned, a practice which has become common place today. The girl bit the poisoned apple and fell into a magical coma. The witch was then chased over a cliff by local wildlife in a freak circumstance. She survived the fall only to be mauled to death by a mountain lion.

The dwarves find the girl, decide she is dead and put her in a tomb. A day later a young man who enters tombs looking specifically for recently perished girls thinks jackpot and, getting started, plants a kiss on her lips which magically revives her. He thinks rumbled! But it turns out he’s a prince; marries the girl and runs the kingdom into the ground.

a piece and a poem

On the phone with Rose a while ago I mentioned this idea I'd had about when I got my camera stolen in New York and how it had made me feel somehow very connected to the place. I tried to make an image about it, as she suggested. It was shit.

Then I went to this meeting about a new magazine featuring poetry and illustration, the idea being writers and illustrators will work together directly to create "pieces" (quite how these will manifest themselves is still uncertain). I revisited the piece in order to send it off to some of the writers I met there, to get us started, more or less. Here is the image.

I have also written a poem which won't be featured in the magazine or mentioned by me again. Here is the poem:
